LUNCH WAGON

Transportation Series

What a challenge this hand-painted cachet turned out to be. A 1890's horse-drawn lunch wagon has pulled up near a railroad station. A dozen customers have congregated around the wagon. A trio of other passengers waits on the near-by train platform. Here was my dilemma for you to appreciate. How do you paint sixteen people in 1890's dress? If you make the colors too bright it will not look realistic. If you use only "earth-tones" it will be too mundane. As a result, after much experimentation, it took 32 separate paint colors for each cachet. 32! The result is a pretty natural looking scene that I have to believe will be the best cachet for the issue.

This cover was serviced on the same trip as the Woodduck and these stamps also went on sale in Columbus, Ohio. After affixing a pair of the stamps to the cover, Maureen took them to Eaton, Ohio to be canceled. Some people in the cachet "eat on" a bench. Some "eat on" their feet. Some plan to "eat on" the train. Others will "eat on and on and on". A cute cancel for a lunch wagon stamp.

The slightly higher cost of this stamp reflects the extended time for hand painting. Looking at it, you will not be dazzled by flamboyant colors. Also, you will not be bored by dull colors. Hopefully you will look at it and say "Here are a group of people from 100 years ago out to lunch." That is what I wanted to accomplish. 32 colors and a lot of time. Item #L1801. $11.00.
