George H.W. Bush
41st President
Cover Announcement
This stamp was issued to honor the 41st President of the United States. In fact, he was often referred to as "Bush 41" to distinguish him from his eldest son George W. Bush ("Bush 43"). Mr. Bush also served as a member of the United States House of Representatives, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Director of the Central lntelligence Agency, and Vice President of the United States.
On December 7, 1941 Japan attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, drawing the United States into World War II. On his 18ft birthday, George enlisted in the Navy as an aviator. Bush served in the Pacific Thealer of the war where he flew a Grumman Avenger torpedo bomber from an aircraft ca:rier. ln 1945 after a successful attack, his plane was shot down. He managed to parachute into the ocean and was eventually rescued by the U.S.S. Finback - an American submarine. He was later awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for this mission.
Durning his presidency, he oversaw the final year of the Cold War and played a key role in the reunification of Germany. He also worked hard to promote trade between Canada, Mexico, and the United States. In 1990 he signed the Americans with Disabilities Act.
After leaving office, he worked tirelessly on humanitarian activities, and historians have ranked him as an above average president. It is an honor to offer this individually hand painted first day cover to a true-life military hero and distinguished American. President George H. W. Bush. Collins #U5801 at $16.50
