Military Working Dogs

Dutch Shepherd

Cover Announcement

This dog evolved naturally in the rural areas in the greater region of todays Netherlands. In 1898 the first breed standard was written for the Dutch shepherd. The color of the desired coat was established as brindle in 1914. A black mask on the face is preferable. Originally the main function of this shepherd dog was to guard and control flocks of sheep. In the early 1900s sheep had, to a large extent, disappeared from the Dutch countryside.

High intelligence and versatile skills made this breed ideal for dog training. They were used as police dogs, search and tracking dogs, guard dogs, and guide dogs for the blind. In World War II the German invasion forces were so impressed with the Dutch shepherd that they took many back to Germany to be used by the military.

Dutch shepherds are loyal, reliable, alert, watchful, active, independent, and intelligent. Obedience and discipline can be achived with excellent resuits. Internationally the breed is best known for law enforcement, and they are sought after candidates for military use and police work.

The reliable and loyal Dutch shepherd is now ready. Collins #A5903 at $16.50
