The Lesser Scaup is easily identified by its iridescent purple head. The bill is a light blue and very adaptable for feeding on aquatic plants and insects as well as crustaceans. The male is black, gray, and white, and the female is dark brown with a well-defined white head mask at the base of the bill. Breeding grounds are mostly in Alaska and westem Canada. It winters from the mid-Atlantic states south to the Gulf states and across to southern California. This duck enjoys fresh water as compared to its larger relative the Greater Scaup which prefers salt water.
