Christmas

Madonna by Moroni

Collins Announcement

Expanding on the of fact that 1987 marked the Bicentennial of the constitution, I decided to capture a christmas scene from 1787. It is Christmas Day and citizens of the fledgling country are gathering for services at a wood framed church. From their attire and from the limited use of stained glass in the church's structure, one can surmise that the scene takes place in fairly affluent area.

Men stand talklng. Couples stroll hand in hand. Parent and child walk together toward the open church door. A horse pulIs a wooden sleigh over the snow, slipping slightly on the icy path. The church could survive to today,s rural settings. Stone foundation. Colorful windows brighteded by the interior light. Open door with the warmth of the congregation beckoning to those still outside. Christmas day two centuries ago. Brought to life by subtle watercolors. Charming.

A single has the Washingtcn, D.C. First Day of Issue cancel with small ornament pictorial. A nice item to commemorate the Constitution Bicentennial 1787 to 1987. Item #D1301. $7.00
