Collins Cover Announcement
GIRL SCOUTS
This was the controversial issue where the national Girl Scout organization said that nothing regarding their organization could be used on the cachets. I was upset and called their national headquarters in New York City, and the Legal Department assured me that the announcement was to protect the Girl Scouts from "negative" or "bad taste" cachets that might tarnish the image. Even so, I decided to abide by their appeal, and my cachet pictures girls camping out in a magnificent outdoor setting. The time is early morning. Two girls are still in their sleeping bags in their tent sipping a hot drink. Backpacks and shoes are nearby. An early riser has breakfast cooking on an open fire and sits on a large flat rock keeping one eye on the fire and the other on the sparkling beauty of a blue mountain lake. Beyond the opposite shoreline, green foothills and purple peaks reach toward a blue sky.
I purchased the stamps in Washington, D.C. and then it was off to National Airport. At the gate and during the flight itself, I "licked and sticked". Arriving at Indianapolis, it was then a drive up to Young America, Indiana for the perfect unofficial - to complement the same cancel used on my Boy Scout cover (#01002 - now sold out).
The stamp itself is very attractive -- a bright green background with multi-colored badges providing a bright and lively perspective. This is a good cover not to miss -- an excellent COLLINS cachet; a super "Young America" First Day cancel; an attractive stamp; a popular topic -- scouting; and, the controversial "guidelines" issued to cachetmakers by National Girl Scout Headquarters which all combine to make this a "must".
