HEMINGWAY
Ernest Hemingway led a colorful life including the roles of big game hunter and fisherman. He was born on July 21, 1899. In 1952 "The Old Man and the Sea" was published and in 1953 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. In the Fifties, Hemingway spent much time in Africa and in 1954 won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
African Vista
It is late afternoon on the sweltering African velde. The large afternoon setting sun is still entirely above the horizon but it is that time of day when the sky turns to blazing golds, oranges and pinks. In this cachet, you can see and sense the heat waves being transmitted through the hot afternoon air. The grassy plain is very realistic and stretches as far as the eye can see. The coloring of the green grass and gold sky is very dramatic. Isolated scrub trees and bushes dot the plain in a random and isolated pattern, but for the most part the beautiful vista is a sea of grass. But.. .the panorama is not void of life. In the distance, a pair of giraffes is silhouetted against the evening sky. A herd of graceful gazelles romps and cavorts on the seemingly endless expanse. Most notably, in the foreground, a male lion with full mane lays under a tree attentively watching the scene before him. His tawny coat is just the right color to blend with the mood of the scene. And, finally, the color and theme of the Hemingway stamp itself blend with the African locale of which he loved to write.
Shark Frenzy
The lonely, old Cuban fisherman had not caught a fish in 84 days. The villagers held him to subtle ridicule. But Santiago did not give up. This is the setting for Hemingway's masterpiece "The Old Man and the Sea".
