PRE-COLUMBIAN

Southeast Indian Cultures

Forty-Five Cent Airmail

In the eastern sky, the morning sun is not yet visible but dawn is just breaking in majestic splendor. Patches of reds and lavenders, of pinks and yellows, bathe both the tropical bay waters and the Carribean heavens. From the sandy shores, native fishermen push out their dugout canoes or wade into the tranquil waters with long spears. Palm trees and tropical plants add touches of green vegetation to the setting. There is much activity as the men begin their day's work but the activity is muted by the feeling of a slow-paced tropical paradise.

The Airmail stamp is canceled with the San Juan bullseye. Just as the growing of crops was a dominant part of the Pre-Columbian peoples of the southwest (COLLINS #M1601 at $7.00), so, too, was the sea a dominant influence on the natives of the southeast. Christopher Columbus will be a B-I-G event in 1992 which will be the 500th Anniversary (impressive number) of his discovery. These two 1990 Columbian issues and the two that will probably be issued in 1991 will be fine and pertinent items to go along with any COLLINS Columbus covers in 1992. In fact, they are terrific items to lead into a Columbus album display or exhibit. Do obtain these covers that provide a glimpse into our country that the U.S. stamp program does not often provide -- the years before Columbus. Item #N1601. $7.25.
