Woodcarved Figurines - Cigar Store Figure

Collins Cover Announcement

WOODCARVING - FOLK ART

(Cigar Store Indian)

Send in your order for this cover and then sit back and wait for it to arrive in your next shipment. This is a fabulous FDC, and I am enthusiastic from head to toe in making this cover available for your collection.

The large, entire hand-painted cachet takes a step back in history -- to the era of the general store. Pot-belly stove with glowing embers. Checker board with game in progress. Sacks and barrels. Shelves stocked with dry goods. Merchandise hanging from the ceiling. Register, scale and candy on the counter. Planked floor. Open door to country setting. Open door. It is by the open door that COLLINS has introduced a new concept to cachets for there stands a wooden Indian. Not drawn. Not painted. But actually cut from the stamp itself and added to the cachet. In scale. In position. In history. A great new way to add a "philatelic touch" to a cachet. Others may use this technique in the future, but COLLINS has opened the door.

To the right of the cachet, a single of the Indian stamp has a wonderful unofficial First Day cancel from Indian Head, Maryland. It is an excellent quality cancel with killer bars.

Ths will be one of the most unusual, most interesting and most beautiful covers in your collection. Item #S1103. $8.50

Lot 21 S1103 — Folk Art Woodcarving — Indian Chief— Limited Edition Cachet

This Folk Art stamp shows a "cigar store Indian," and after buying them in the official city of Washinaton, D.C., they were driven to the small town of Indian Head, Maryland. These wooden figures were often used by general stores and tobacco shops inside and outside to attract customer attention. On occasion, they are still observed in use today. In this case, I added an additional touch to the Collins hand painted cachet. Instead of adding the subject to the illustration, the actual image from an additional stamp was cut out and placed between the end of the counter and the door. This is a limited-cachet variety and would be a marvelous addition to any Collins collection.
