SOJOURNER TRUTH
This cover captures the woman and the times as she speaks intently against slavery to a group of citizens in the mid-1800's. With a brightly painted barn as a backdrop and livestock grazing peacefully in a distant pasture, Sojourner, with outstretched arms, holds the attention of everyone in the audience. I like the way this cachet turned out and would recommend it.
One single is officially canceled at New Paltz, N.Y. For my unofficial I chose her birthplace of Hurley, New York. This is a lovely historic village of old stone buildings and white churches. For the artist, photographer or history buff, I recommend a visit if ever in the area. It is charming. While at the small post office, I asked directions to Truth's birthplace -- I decided to take a look before heading home. The Postmistress explained that the building had been acquired by a dentist, and at exactly that moment she exclaimed "Here comes Gary now!"
I had a very interesting chat with this current caretaker of Sojourner's home in her beginning years -- and, he gave me directions and invited me to drive up on his property and take a look at the building -- which I did. The canceled covers were with me, and I dare say that they are the only ones which actually traveled on their issue day to the very grounds upon which Sojourner Truth was born.
Another interesting chapter for collectors of COLLINS covers. Item #Y1001. $7.50
