Great Americans

Hugo L. Black Supreme Court Associate Justice

Collins Cover Announcement

HUGO BLACK

This is a very vibrant hand-painted cachet. In the foreground are three individuals vocally demonstrating their First Amendment rights -- freedom of Speech. One can be construed as a candidate and the other two as supporters of a cause. Black was a champion of the First Amendment, and he also pioneered fair labor practices.

In this regard, the cachet also shows a worker grinding down a metal bar -- sparks flying. On the wall, a clock's hands point to an approaching 5 p.m., symbolizing the 8-hour work day. Completing the cachet, Mr. Black's home state of Alabama is illustrated. When compared to any other cachets done for this issue, I believe that this COLLINS will be judged the most animated and dynamic.

Washington, D.C. was the First Day city. After obtaining the stamps, it was off to Blackwood, New Jersey for the unofficial First Day cancel. Each cover has five of the Hugo Black stamps.

A very attractive FDC in the Great American Series. Item #Z1001. $7.50
