"Beau Geste"

A mounted desert bandit, sword raised and ready, comes galloping across the sand. His target is a lone legionaire who calmly kneels and meets the charge with rifle at the ready. The French Foreign Legion remains a legend and the 1939 film "Beau Geste" added much to the romantic and military reputation of its legionaires.

This hand-painted cachet is a contrast of colors. The blue uniform of the soldier and the violet mask and cape of the fearsome marauder. The green palms and lavendar shadows of a desert oasis. The ever-present sea of sand and the expansive blue sky. A nice cachet.

A Hollywood, California bullseye cancel ties the attractive Classic Film stamp to the cover. This second FDC joins "Gone With the Wind" in the COLLINS series of four. Still to come are "Stagecoach" and "The Wizard of Oz". This set is proving popular and "Beau Geste" is now ready. Item #H1703. $8.50.
