Circus Wagon

Collins Cover Announcement

CIRCUS WAGON

Syracuse, New York was the site of the 1990 First Day Cover Society Convention and it was there that the Circus Wagon was issued on August 31st. The lobby of the Society's Hotel and Convention Center was decorated in a festive manner with many big-top items including a circus wagon. Postal employees were very curteous and helpful.

After acquiring the stamps, it was off to the southeastern Pennsylvania town of Red Lion. I wanted to obtain a really nifty postmark for the Day of Issue, and for a circus topical Red Lion is a "mane" highlight of this COLLINS FDC.

The hand-painted cachet features many of the familiar circus acts. A towering stilt-walker. A motorcycle riding brown bear. A ring-tossing juggler. A performing elephant. An ever-present clown. A bowing pony with ringmaster and pretty assistant. And, of course, a lion in a red-trimmed circus wagon. All of the above are nicely coordinated in this brightly colored cachet.

A strip of five stamps makes its own circus parade and the strip is tied to each cover with two of the Red Lion postmarks. This great cancel was a COLLINS exclusive. No one else obtained it.

When you see this cover you will "roar" your approval and I'm not "lion". Item #S1701. $9.00.
