Dwight D. Eisenhower
Collins Cover Announcement
DWIGHT DAVID EISENHOWER
It is D-Day and the Allies have started the invasion of Normandy. Army troops have just disembarked from a landing craft and wade through the surf toward the distant beach. On the shore, explosions from artillery await the infantry. The hand-painted cachet is designed from the perspective of being inside the landing craft looking out at the battle scene. In addition to the invasion cachet which spans the entire length of the cover, there is an oval portrait of General Eisenhower -- the Supreme Commander.
The stamp is a nice one. It is large and shows a presidential portrait against a backdrop of the General talking to his troops. For a terrific unofficial First Day cancel, I obtained a great train pictorial from Topeka, Kansas -Eisenhower's home state. Railroads played a major role in World War II from both the homefront and military aspects. Also, trains have always played an important part in political campaigns. Accordingly, this railroad pictorial (and it is a great one) is a perfect postmark for this cover.
Much emphasis will soon be put on World War II as we start celebrating 50th anniversaries of various events from that conflict. This military FDC will be a good one to have in your collection. Dwight David Eisenhower was a major figure in the 20th Century and this COLLINS certainly does him justice. Soldiers with full packs assaulting the Normandy coast. A large portrait of the General. A lovely large railroad pictorial tying the large, attractive Eisenhower stamp to the cover. This could be a quick sell out and is definitely a COLLINS you will enjoy. Item #Z1701. $9.25.
