CLASSIC FILMS

"Gone With the Wind"

Four great movies were made in 1939 and a like number of very nice U.S. stamps were issued to commemorate their production. The four were the Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, Beau Geste, and Stagecoach. At this time, I am pleased to offer my "Gone With the Wind" FDC.

For the hand-painted cachet, Rhett Butler has swept Scarlet O'Hara off her feet and into his arms. He has begun to ascend the massive staircase. Red carpeted stairs and a red gown worn by Scarlet set the color tone. In the stamp, the red type is drawn out and made more visible by the extensive use of red in the cachet. Details should also be noted. The woodwork in the intricately carved bannister. The ornate lamp. The patterned wallpaper and oval portraits. A poignant scene from one of the most viewed movies of all times.

This COLLINS is destined to become a sought-after collectible. Not only will it be subject to the quest of future COLLINS collectors but it will also be an item of interest to "Gone With the Wind" enthusiasts.

The large, colorful, and well executed stamp has a Hollywood, California First Day bullseye cancellation. In the weeks ahead I'll be offering the other three covers in this sure-to-be popular series. Item #H1702. $8.50.
