Olympians

Ray Ewry - Track and Field

Collins Cover Announcement

FAMOUS OLYMPIANS

RAY EWRY

This is the fifth and final cover for the "Famous Olympian" set which was issued in Minneapolis. At the same time the stamps were to be issued, there was an Olympic Torch Run being conducted across Minnesota. Each day a special postmark was available at the town through which the torch runner was passing. The possibility of this great cancel being used with the new stamps was great news for First Day Cover collectors. After picking up the stamps in Minneapolis, it was off to Maple Grove which was the cancel station city for July 6th. As a final result, this set of five COLLINS Olympic FDCs have the topically correct and actual First Day of Issue postmark.

Raymond Charles Ewry was quite a leaper. In the 1900 Paris Olympics he won gold medals in the high jump, triple jump, and broad jump. In 1904 during the St. Louis Olympic Games he won gold medals in the same three events. And, as a demonstration of his athletic staying power, he won golds in the high jump and broad jump in London's Summer Olympics of 1908. My handpainted cachet is done in the same format as the four previously offered. My pose shows Ray going over the high bar and his face is strained with the grimmace of ultimate effort.

I do have a limited supply of the previous four still in stock but only a few remain and they will sell out soon. If you need any or all of them please order soon. They are priced at $8.75 each.
