Collins Cover Announcement

FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT

In the pre-dawn winter morning of January 30th, Dianne (a trusted servicer who helps me on occasion) and I were headed north to Hyde Park, N.Y. We arrived early and waited for the stamps to go on sale. Making our purchase, we returned immediately to the car and headed south for this was NOT to be a typical "COLLINS" with "First Day of Issue" cancel - a uRTille and very special cover for this issue was the goal. Dianne was to be the driver while I tore, licked, and sticked. Late morning we arrived at Roosevelt, N.J., and this cancel was obtained on lower right stamp.

Back in the car and heading north we continued the process, this time putting a stamp on upper right. Late afternoon found us at Franklin, N.J. and cancel was used on upper stamp. What a FDC! Both cancels are matching (a bonus in appearance) being black with killer bars. Both are clear and appear one directly over the other so that you have two unofficials reading "FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT". Talk about related cancels.

The hand painted cachet shows a business attired F.D.R. with a red, white, and blue background surrounded by a gold border. The cancels on this FDC really make it a desirable item, and I recommend this one. Item #A501 - $5.50

Spring 2017 Mail Sale Commentary

Lot 14 A501 — Franklin Roosevelt

This is a truly great philatelic Collins cover for fans of unofficial first day postmarks. Two of us drove up to Hyde Park, NY in the pre-dawn hours, arriving on a cold winter morning just before the new Roosevelt stamps went on sale. After buying the stamps, we jumped-back in the car and h-eaded south to Roosevelt, NJ, putting the stamps on the lower right corner of the envelopes as we drove. At Roosevelt, we secured great cancels and then headed to Franklin, NJ, affixing the remaining stamps as we traveled. There, the second postmark was obtained. Amazingly, and quite by coincidence, the two postmarks are matching killer bar cancels. Just magnificent! The hand painted cachet shows FDR with his familiar cigarette in holder

Lot 16 A501 — Franklin Roosevelt — 1-30-82

I decided to make a unique and very special cancel combination for this first day cover. With the help of a friend, we arrived at Hyde Park, NY early in the morning and purchased the stamps. Immediately after we headed south while I tore, licked, and stuck the stamps on while in the car. Late that morning we arrived at Roosevelt, NJ, and this cancel was placed on the lower right stamp. The process continued, and a stamp was placed on the upper right of the cover. Onward again to Franklin. NJ where a cancel was placed on the upper stamp. What an FDC! The cancels are matching (a bonus in appearance) being black with killer bars. Both are clear and appear one directly over the other so that you have two unofficials reading "FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT." Talk about related cancels! The hand 1)ainted cachet shows a business-attired F.D.R. with a red, white, and blue background surrounded by a gold border. The fabulous cancels on this cover really make it a very desirable item.
