George Washington

Military Officer

Collins Cover Announcement

GEORGE WASHINGTON

This issue commemorated the 250th Anniversary of George Washington's birth. It was a tremendously popular issue, and as such the following covers will always be in demand by topical collectors as well as First Day Cover devotees. I felt that this issue would be a good one to do cancel varieties on as several excellent opportunities existed for some great unofficials. Also, Washington's life offered a good opportunity for different cachet designs. The end result was three covers - one showing his early years as a surveyor (D502), one his middle years as a military officer (D503) and one his later years as a political leader (D501). The group of three covers will make a fine addition to your collection, and the 02 and 03 varieties are limited and will sell out quickly. As always, I must reserve the right to limit number purchased.

Washington as Soldier (D503)

The cachet on this cover is a colorful reminder of the Revolutionary War era in Washington's life. In colorful uniform of red, white and blue the General has drawn sword and is battle ready. His black horse adds to the spirit with the hairs of his mane bristling with excitement. This cover also has a single stamp with the "First Day of Issue" Mount Vernon cancel. For a related unofficial, the covers were taken to Washington Boro, PA This town is located on the banks of the historical Susquehanna River in a straight line between Valley Forge and York, PA - the temporary colonial capital. It is a large pictorial showing a bust of Washington (somewhat faint) and the wording "Birthday Station". Included are initials LCPS for Lancaster County Philatelic Society. This is a good related unofficial. The handpainted cachet with its Yankee Doodle Spirit and the two hand cancels make this another fine FDC in the COLLINS tradition. Both D502 and D503 are limited cancel varieties and can be expected to sell out quickly. Item #D503 - $5.50

Spring 2025 Mail Sale Commentary

Lot 5 D501 to D503 — George Washington — (mini-set of three) — 2-22-82

This issue commemorated the 250t11 Anniversary of George Washington's birth. I decided to do three distinctive cachets for this distinguished stamp of a side-view of Washington's head placed over a colorful flag of the United States. These three cachets represent his early years as a surveyor (D502), his middle years as a military officer (D503) and his later years as a political leader and president (D501). Each cover has two of the George Washington stamps placed on the right with large and very meaningful official and unofficial cancels. Please take a close look at the three wonderful George Washington FDCs on the attached color sheets. These covers have not appeared previously in one of my mail sales
