Transportation Issue
Hanson Cab 1890s
Collins Cover Announcement
HANSOM CAB
This handpainted cover is another in the Transportation Series. The cachet shows an old-fashioned horse-drawn cab which is painted in an attention-getting color. Inside is a lady passenger while above and to the rear is a driver. A light beige background surrounded by a kelly green border complete the color scheme of this cachet.
The term cab is derived from the French word cabriolet. The definition is "a light two-wheeled carriage, usually with a hood that folds, drawn by one horse". In recognition of the French background, I chose Paris, Tennessee as the unofficial cancel. First a pair of the 10.9 cent stamps was hand canceled "First Day of Issue" at Chattanooga, the official city. Then, in order to make it to Paris in time, a small plane was chartered for the trip. Once there, a second pair was hand canceled with the nice, related unofficial.
