SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY

It was off to Chicago for the First Day of this issue. I was delighted to find that the post office provided tables to service the covers as usually it's done standing up at counters or window sills. I was happy to meet Frank Kovich, his wife and children and took part in a brief.picture-taking bout. It is a great hobby for family togetherness such as the Kovichs share and a couple of their children have embarked on cachet-making careers.

A single has the "First Day of Issue" hand cancel (D601) except for a cancel variety I did which has a "Windy City" pictorial cancel (D602) that was available at the main office. I haven't done many cancel varieties lately and quite a few collectors like them, so I grabbed this great opportunity. The hand painted cachet showing a scientist at microscope and a booming factory scene is the same design for each variety but the coloring is different for each so they really are two distinct looking covers.

The race against the clock then began as I flew back to New Jersey and drove to my unofficial city of Milltown which I think fits the industry theme. As always, I must reserve the right to limit covers for each collector.
