This unheralded, and for the most part unknown, German-American was an important early educator from Wisconsin. A hand painted cachet shows his portrait with imposing full beard and has him attired in the blue uniform of the Civil War. Schurz served as an officer for the Union forces. A single 4 stamp plus flag stamp has the official First Day cancel from Watertown, Wisconsin. The large, unofficial hand cancel with killer bars is from Germantown, Wisc. and reflects Carl's national origin. The unofficial ties to the cover two identical stamps as does the Watertown official.
