Winter 2020 Mail Sale Commentary

Lot 11 W602 — Babe Ruth — (7-6-83)

This is the acclaimed cachet that shows a young boy looking across the street at the Baseball Hall of Fame and daydreaming about Babe Ruth whose portrait image is beautifully and realistically portrayed in the clouds overhead. The cachet is hand painted, and the scene captures the magic of the moment. It sold out very quickly when first offered in 1983 and has become one of the absolute premier collectibles for baseball and sports collectors. I obtained the stamps in the early morning hours in the official city of Chicago, caught a flight to Syracuse, and then drove to Cooperstown. Accordingly, this Collins first day cover has a superb, large bullseye first day postmark from Cooperstown, New York — home of Baseball's Hall of Fame. You will love this cover, and it's one I'm very fond of.
