It was very apparent to all who observed this loving and public couple that they were totally devoted to each other. Barbara was First Lady of the United States from 1989 to 1993 as the wife of George H. W. Bush who served as the 41st President. She previously had been the Second Lady of the United States from 1981 to 1989.

Barbara was born in1925, met George at age 16, and married him in 1945 while he was on leave from the Navy. She was the founder of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. During her First Lady years, she devoted most or her time to that cause, chairing many reading organizations.

The Bushes enjoyed a stong marriage for 72 years. Barbara became a very popular First Lady and was seen by many as "a national grandmother." Together they spent much of their leisure time at the family vacation home in Kennebunkport, Maine.
