ARCHITECTURE
Nestled in the beautiful mountain region of western North Carolina is the city of Asheville, There, in the 1800's, Commodore Vanderbilt had constructed the regal Biltmore House. Today, it is a lovely spot to visit for the mansion and garden upon garden of flowers provide both a glimpse of history and a chance to enjoy the natural and man-made beauty of the estate.
Two of the stamps are officially hand canceled "First Day of Issue" in Washington, D.C. The opposite two stamps, including the Biltmore House, are hand canceled unofficially at Asheville, N.C., Biltmore Station. I would only rate the quality of the Asheville cancel as fair, but it certainly is a "related" unofficial and, therefore, adds a lot to the cover.
The hand-painted cachet shows a view of the mansion and some of the grounds. Very attractive. Item #I401 - $5.75
