Collins Cover Announcement
Spring 2017 Mail Sale Commentary
BOBBY JONES
This cover is the first COLLINS "entire" - that is, the cachet design is expanded to the whole envelope. This unique cachet is one of the finest COLLINS covers yet produced, and it certainly will add an unusual touch to your collection. To the left is Bobby Jones hitting a drive from a fairway. Two stamps are placed in the center of the envelope, and the flight of the ball is over the stamps. To the right is the green on which the ball has landed and is bouncing toward the flag. Evergreens and hilly terrain make up the background. The cover is handpainted and stunning. Different shades of green dominate, and a blue dawn sky is highlighted. At the horizon line where sky meets earth is a bright orange/yellow streak of sunrise which really sets off the color scheme.
One stamp is canceled with a bullseye from Pinehurst, N.C. - the First Day city and site of the "Golfing Hall of Fame". The other stamp is canceled unofficially with a slightly larger bullseye from Augusta, Ga. - home of the Masters Tournament. Again, the beautiful cachet flanks both stamps and cancels with the golf ball being driven over them. This cover with first COLLINS "entire" cachet should be added to your collection now as I predict a quick sell-out. Many customers were disappointed on the Reagan, Migratory Duck and Big-Game Animal covers, and I urge everyone who wants this cover to order promptly. It will be an asset to your collection. Multiple orders are ok, but I reserve the right, as always, to limit orders as necessary. Item #K401 - $5.50
Lot 10 K401 — Bobby Jones — (the very first Collins "entire" cachet)
When designing the cachet layout for this cover, I wanted to show Bobby hitting a long drive to a green. To create the illusion of distance, I decided to have his shot go over the stamps and postmarks with Jones at the left and the green at the right. As a matter of happenstance, I created the very first Collins "entire" cachet which is certainly an historic milestone.
Two of the new stamps are placed in the center of the envelope along the bottom edge. The stamp on the left is canceled at the official city of Pinehurst, NC, and the covers were then taken to Augusta, GA where they received another first day of issue postmark. I believe that Collins cachets were the only ones to obtain the Augusta cancel. The hand painted cachet is an absolute beauty. Jones stands on a fairway on the left side' of the envelope and lofts a shot up and over the stamps and postmarks to a green on the right side of the envelope. This cover is shown in color on page 169 of the book. Golf is a very popular pastime, and the subject is very actively collected. This first day cover is stunning.
