Frederic Remington

Painter, Illustrator, Sculptor, and Writer

Collins Cover Announcement

"COMING THRU THE RYE"

The stamp features a tribute to the American sculptor, Frederic Remington. The topic is a sculpture of the old west - four cowboys galloping at full speed on their thundering mustangs.

The handpainted cachet is a still-life of items associated with the cowboy - wagonwheel, saddle, branding irons, carbine rifle and hat and bandana. Colors chosen are more subtle, mostly browns that compliment the stamp with a few brighter ones for effect. Due to an error of omission, this is the first (and hopefully only) unsigned COLLINS as the usual logo does not appear. Being unsigned may add to its interest for collectors.

A single stamp is officially hand canceled "First Day of Issue" in Oklahoma City, and a second single has a great unofficial cancel with killer bars from Mustang, Oklahoma. Item #L401 - $5.50

Lot 11 L401 — Frederic Remington

An intriguing aspect of having this cover in your collection is that the familiar Collins logo was inadvertently left off the envelope. How this happened I don't know, but it certainly does add an interesting touch.

If you like covers with an Americana or western theme, this one is for you. It's also a chance to add another dandy "early" Collins to your collection. The envelope has two of the stamps depicting Remington's famous sculpture entitled "Coming Through the Rye" (showing four hardriding cowboys) with one being canceled in Oklahoma City and the other being postmarked in Mustang, OK — both on the first day of issue. The hand painted cachet features a wagon wheel with rifle, cowboy hat, saddle, and branding irons. It is illustrated in the book on page 209.
