WINTER OLYMPICS

Alpine Skiing

If one word can be used to describe my covers offered to date in this Olympic set it would be "speed". The speed of the luge hurtling down the frozen track. The speed of the hockey puck flying at the waiting U.S.A. goalie. And now the speed of the Olympic skier flying down the mountainside. In fact, when you look at this hand-painted cachet, there is a distinct 3-D appearance as the athlete seems to be skiing right out of the cover in the final drive to the finish line. Note the motion effect achieved with spraying snow and the semi-blurred appearance of the evergreen trees and course boundary fence.

The alpine skier is in sharp focus. The now fashionable ornate and fancy uniform that is in vogue. The shiny helmet and attached snow goggles. The boots, carefully chosen skis, and curved poles that have evolved from their straight predecessors. And, note the grimmace of effort on the Olympian's face as every fraction of a second is strained for in hopes of winning a medal.

This is the third cover offered in this superb set of five. I think it is one of the finest group of Olympic First Day Covers ever created. They grab your attention. An ultimate winter sport as the steep slope of the mountain is challenged in a race against the clock. Alpine Skiing. Item #L2201. $10.75.
