WILLIAM SAROYAN

A son of Armenian immigrants, Saroyan wrote hundreds of short stories, plays and novels. His stories would often highlight the plights and life adventures of immigrants throughout the world. One of the stories related a tale of an Indian who drifted into a California town. He was treated with distain except for an immigrant boy who befriended him. They became close and one day the Indian surprised everyone by wiring for money and buying one of the most expensive automobiles available. Saying he couldn't drive, he had the dealer give the boy basic driving lessons. For the whole summer the boy drove wherever he wanted -- fishing, hunting, wherever. The Indian tagged along and the boy grew and matured. One day, the boy went into town and found the Indian had driven back to Oklahoma. It became apparent that all along he was capable of driving and that the summer was dedicated to the young man that showed him friendship.

The hand-painted cachet shows the Indian watching the boy fish on one of their excursions as the early automobile sits nearby. It is a scene that captures the essence of the story. A Fresno postmark, birthplace of Saroyan, ties the stamp to the cover. A nice item commemorating a prolific author. Item #U1801. $8.25
