HUBERT H. HUMPHREY
Great American Series
This stamp honors a politician who was active as I grew up, while I was in the Air Force, and while I was in my twenties. He was certainly an important part of the turbulent 1960's. While attending college, I had an oportunity to shake his hand.
Hubert was Vice President to Lyndon Johnson from January 1965 to January 1969. He was very active in labor, Civil Rights, and other domestic programs. He was part of Johnson's "Great Society" administration and, although I differed from him on some political issues, I always considered him an honorable individual. He ran for President in 1968 against Richard Nixon and lost by a slim margin.
For my hand-painted cachet I used very interesting, "3-D, extended" lettering plus a life-like, large portrait of Humphrey. The red, white, and blue color scheme brings to mind that we are again in a season of political conventions and campaigns. The 52-cent stamp is canceled at Minneapolis, Minnesota. He hailed from that state and was a four-term United States Senator.
He was affectionately known as "HHH" and "The Happy Warrior". Hubert Horatio Humphrey. Item #Z1801. $8.75.
