Collins Cover Announcement

NUMISMATICS

This announcement brings great news to COLLINS subscribers. The distance to my "unofficial" First Day City was far and inaccessible except by car. I was in a rush to get the stamps on cover and had to be satisfied with a lesser number of covers. It would be a race against the clock hands of Father Time. There is a sufficient number of covers to supply my regular subscribers and that is what I am going to do. So, even though this is not officially one of your two "subscriber only" 1992 covers, in fact, that is exactly what it is. No extras can be ordered and none will be offered to non-subscribers. My few remaining covers will be offered in my future mail sales which will establish a nice market value for them.

It is quite a cover. The hand-painted cachet features several silver and gold United States coins. A Columbian half dollar from the 1892 World's Exposition has a prominent place as I thought it would be appropriate during this period of time celebrating his 500th Discovery Anniversary. It's a very distinctive, different, and eye-catching cachet.

The big news is the cancel. In the southwest corner of Iowa I found a small town named Coin. My blood raced with excitement because with a numismatics stamp issue one just couldn't hope to come up with a better postmark. After picking up the stamps in Chicago, they had to be put on the covers as quickly as possible. Then, with safety and speed limits in mind, it was a dash over and down to the town of Coin. A fine magenta cancel ties the stamp to the cover. A nice touch is that "Iowa" is spelled out in the postmark rather than the usual abbreviation.

I was the only cachetmaker to obtain the "Coin" First Day postmark on this coin collecting cover. As a subscriber, you are getting this very limited FDC for your collection. It is going to be one of those "hot" items in the future as it becomes known.

Item #K1901. $9.75.

Spring 2020 Mail Sale Commentary

Lot 23 K1901 — Numismatics (8-13-91)

Since coin collecting is a close cousin to stamp collecting, I wanted this first day cover to be something special. I had found a perfect place to obtain the perfect first day postmark — Coin, Iowa. It was in the southwest corner of Iowa and was difficult to reach from the official city of Chicago. Note the full name of Iowa appears in the postmark. The hand painted cachet features several U.S. coins. A crisp looking cover and the Coin cancel is a Collins exclusive. A numismatics stamp with a coin first day postmark!
