Collins Cover Announcement

U.S.A. OLYMPIC TEAM

ONE DOLLAR HIGH-VALUE ISSUE

It is fitting that my description of this item begins with the stamp itself for it is distinctively different from most issues. The stamp format is vertical, and gold foil strips about 1/8 inch wide and running the full length of the stamp serve as two eye-catching borders that frame the design. At the top of the stamp is the familiar eagle logo under which text reads "United States Postal Service". Under that are the letters "USA" beneath which are the five colorful linked Olympic rings of blue, yellow, black, green, and red. Next there is text that reads "Official Sponsor of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Team". Finally, the high-value denomination is represented by a large, red "$1". Remember, all of the above is a description of the stamp itself and, surprisingly, it is not crowded but rather the layout is actually quite attractive. And, being positioned between the shiny golden borders is a very nice touch.

Since the Postal Service sponsorship extended to both the Winter and Summer Games, I wanted my hand-painted cachet to reflect both events. Across the upper portion of the cachet streaks a four-man bobsled as it traverses the icy track. Bobsledding is a premier event of the Winter Games. Diagonal text bisects the "entire" cachet and the lower half is devoted to gymnastics which has become a highlight of the Summer Games. A muscular athlete maintains complete control as he competes on the pommel horse apparatus.

The cachet is nicely "wrapped" around the Orlando, Florida First Day postmark and is very distinctive and is sure to become a recognized and sought-after cover within the hobby. Don't miss it as it has a lot going for it. A high-value one dollar stamp which, in itself, ensures a high collectible status. A nice topical item for "sports" and "Olympic" enthusiasts, it will be sought by present and future collectors in these areas. And, it will always be a special addition to present and future COLLINS collections as are the high-value stamps that I've done in the past. A fine Olympic Games First Day Cover made somewhat unique by the fact that the cachet incorporates both the Summer and Winter Games. A winner. Item #R1901. $12.25.
