American Music

The Carter Family

Collins Cover Announcement

COUNTRY MUSIC

The Carter Family

The green hills of Tennessee provide the background, and entwining morning glories serve as the floral frame for this hand-painted cachet portrait of the First Family of Country Music. Shown are Alvin Pleasant Carter and his wife Sara.

They were joined in their performances by the sister-in-law of "A.P.", Maybelle Carter. This trio exemplified the influence of family music traditions in the southeastern mountains.

Their repertoire of original tunes and traditional folk songs provides a country music legacy to all of those who enjoy this uniquely American artform. I personally love it

.

The new stamp has the Day of Issue postmark from Nashville, Tennessee--home of country music and the Grand Ole Opry. Note how the background color of the stamp is used to portray a Smokey Mountain sunset in my portrait cachet. Also, to add some additional interest, I've included in the cachet a guitar and autoharp--two mainstay instruments of country music.

In 1970 they were all inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. One of the signature numbers of the threesome was "Wildwood Flower". I would like to imagine that this handpainted COLLINS cachet pictures them as they have just completed that song as the final selection on a warm mountain evening.

As a sinking sun drops behind the Tennessee hills, this cover says "Thank You" to Maybelle, Sara, and A.P. for helping to bring country music to national prominence. The Carter Family. Item #B2203. $10.75.
