WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES
Athletes from around the globe compete in their various events in this world-class, Olympic style sporting contest. Multicolored uniforms add to the visual appeal of this hand-painted First Day Cover. The stamp itself is brightly colored and with hand-painted text supplementing the action cachet, all in all, this is a very vivid cover. As for the events depicted, they all show important moments for the athlete's hopes of a top performance. A shot-putter strains for every ounce of strength as he releases the heavy metal ball. A sprinter concentrates on the transition from the starting blocks to now obtaining full stride. A pole vaulter's body has cleared the bar and now he must pull over his trailing feet without knocking it down. A gymnast has completed his routine on the high bar and now readies himself for a dramatic dismount that will please the judges but one in which he must nail a clean landing.
This COLLINS FDC is an important sports topical item because it commemorates the first time ever that the World University Games were held in the United States. The site was Buffalo, New York, and that is also the place of First Day postmark -- a nice, clear bullseye cancellation. The games are strictly for amateurs and events include track and field, baseball, gymnastics, basketball, swimming, 'diving, soccer, water polo, tennis, volleyball, fencing and rowing.
A colorful, action-packed sports First Day Cover. Item #I2101. $10.75.
