Columbus’ Landing in Puerto Rico

500th Anniversary

Collins Cover  Announcement

COLUMBUS IN PUERTO RICO

500th Anniversary

On November 19, 1493 Christopher Columbus made a landing on the western coast of Puerto Rico. This was during his second voyage which was a long one from September 25, 1493 to June 11, 1496. As he sailed westward, he entered the Americas near Guadeloupe and continued on to Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and Cuba. He founded the settlement of Isabella which is the present day Dominican Republic and established a fort at Santo Tomas. He also explored the coast of Jamaica during this

voyage.

My large hand-painted cachet shows a caravel-type ship approaching the lush tropical coastline. A long boat is being readied for an exploratory trip to the shore where a native settlement of thatched huts can be seen. Two dug-out canoes cautiously approach the mysterious large ship from across the sea. Watercolors bring out the best in this historic scene. Vivid blue skies. Green sun-bathed tropical vegetation. Turquoise Caribbean waters. Earth tones of the beach, huts, sailing ship and canoes. A cachet that meets the expectations of a historic moment.

The First Day postmark is from San Juan, Puerto Rico. This cover is a fine complementary piece to my "First Voyage - 500th Anniversary" covers (G2001 - G2004) and, of course, to my

"Columbus Souvenir Sheet" set of sixteen (12001 - 12016). A nice item depicting a scene from 1493 with a very popular Columbus subject matter. Item #J2201. $10.75.
