GARDEN FLOWERS

LILAC

During the last couple of weeks I've been putting in some fall bulbs so that spring flowers can add their colorful blooms to the wonderful months of April and May. Along with the autumn planting I've been getting the "Garden Flower" covers ready and I'm very pleased to offer the first one -- the lilac.

These stamps were the booklet ones that were unusually long. At first I didn't care for the extra length, however, individually on cover the bigger size now seems good to me. It has the Seattle, Washington Day of Issue bullseye postmark. Also, the text style I've chosen has a cute, flowery-type design that I think really adds a lot of expression.

The hand-painted cachet is a scene that we can all identify with. On a brick patio, a woven basket is overflowing with fresh cut purple lilacs. Prominently placed nearby are three hand gardening tools, a watering can, a pair of gloves, and a hose with the familiar stream of spray attachment. Beyond the patio is just a glimpse of grass and the whole scene is bordered in the back by a short picket fence. I have to believe that this COLLINS cachet will capture better than any produced by any other maker the theme of "Garden Flowers" because here, in addition to the flowers, are the tools of the home gardener.

Down the road (or should I say primrose path?) I'll be offering the others in this cheerful set -- tulip, iris, hyacinth, and daffodil. For now, it's lilac time, and I'm happy to present a hand-painted basketful. Item #Q2105. $10.75.
