ROCK 'N ROLL -- RHYTHM & BLUES
Clyde McPhatter
This cover is the sixth in my Rock 'n Roll set with only one to go. I personally like the way this one turned out very much. The artwork and the color combinations make this a most attractive FDC indeed. To the left, in a portrait, the young Clyde McPhatter poses with his winsome smile and overall handsome appearance. The hand painting is coordinated very closely with those colors used on his individual stamp. Along the top of the cover, his name is also very prominent in the same colors.
McPhatter was born in 1933 in Durham, North Carolina. The first vocal group he performed with was the "Dominoes" and in 1953 he founded his own group -- "The Drifters!" He was one of the first musicians to combine pop and gospel thus making a definitive contribution to the emerging sound of Rock and Roll.
This issue was somewhat unique as it was a joint First Day in both Cleveland, Ohio and Santa Monica, California. Above the First Day postmark there is an additional part of the cachet that makes this cover. There are three records shown with three of Clyde's hit songs shown on the labels. Since records were the mass media vehicle of Rock and Roll this "entire" COLLINS cachet really captures the mood of the era. I like the way it came out and it is easily one of the nicest of my Rock 'n Roll set. Clyde McPhatter. Item #T2103. $10.75.
