ROCK 'N ROLL -- RHYTHM & BLUES
Buddy Holly
Charles Hardin Holly was born in Lubbock, Texas on September 7, 1936. Buddy, as he was known, began to use the Rhythm and Blues back-beat in Country Music, and in 1957 and 1958 his
group -- Holly and the Crickets -- recorded seven Top-40 hits. Many rock stars that were to come along later, including the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, derived their guitar arrangements and methods from Holly's stylizing.
My hand-painted cachet features a portrait of Buddy Holly in the same format as those previously offered in this set. Also pictured are his guitar and reference to one of his biggest hits -- "Peggy Sue". The hand-painted lettering on this cover also lends much to its up-beat appearance.
The stamp has the First Day postmark with its unusual joint release status from Santa Monica and Cleveland. This COLLINS set is now nearing completion, and I believe that these FDCs were the finest produced for the Rock 'n Roll issue. This one is a tribute to a young star who died at the height of his popularity in a plane crash (along with Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper) on February 3, 1959.
An American music legend. Buddy Holly. Item #T2106. $10.75.
