Collins Cover Announcement
EARLY LOCOMOTIVES
Eddy's No. 242
This hand-painted cachet lends itself to the pleasure of practicing the art of "cover appreciation" that Earl Planty talked about so much in his writings. A towering trestle provides a lofty river crossing for an early locomotive and its train of passenger cars. A picturesque vista of a woodland river valley makes this a grand FDC.
At an early age I can remember my mom referring to the color "sky blue pink". This phrase has stuck with me over the years because of the conflicting hues of blue and pink being used to describe a single delightful color condition of the early evening sky. This cachet has that peaceful pink tone in the blue sky and it reflects passively off the meandering river below.
In the distance, a low mountain range is seen with shadowed peaks extending toward the colorful heavens. Closer in, wooded foothills with foliage turning to a mantle of autumn scenery gently slope toward water's edge. On the floor of the river valley, the buildings of a small community are clustered tngpi-bp-r, framed by i-HP main arc of the high trpatie The cachet captures the engine just as it is about to complete the river crossing. Note the stonework of the structure that anchors the long bridge and also the tall spruce trees above whose pointed tops the train rolls on through the lovely countryside.
A really nice railroad collectible from the glory days of steam. Eddy's No. 242. Item #G2303. $10.75.
Autumn 2022 Mail Sale Commentary
G2301 to G2305 — Early Locomotives (7-28-94)
I can't remember the last time I saw these fantastic railroad cachets available on the open market, and they have never been in one of my Mail Sales before. For the Hudson's General stamp (G2301), the hand painted cachet shows an exciting close-up of a powerful steam locomotive. An old-time railroad yard is featured for the McQueen's Jupiter stamp (G2302). For the Eddy's Number 242 (G2303), I show a high trestle bridge with a train crossing. Emerging from a tunnel to the delight of spectators is an early locomotive for the Ely's No. 10 stamp (G2304). And to close out the set is a fabulous close-up of a mighty steam engine with an open track ahead for the Buchanan's No. 999 stamp (G2305). I can't emphasize enough how fast this set sold out when first offered and how difficult it is to find them now. Forest green borders on all five bind the set together. Perhaps the finest Collins railroad covers to date.
