WINTER OLYMPICS
Ice Hockey
This outstanding winter sports COLLINS First Day Cover is the second of this 1994 set of five to be offered. The hand-painted action scene shows the United States goalie dressed in the red, white and blue team uniform coming out of his net to "make the save". A slap shot has been launched from some distance and the puck is pictured flying toward the moving goalie. His over-sized stick and gloved hand are rising to meet the on-coming puck. His eyes, protected by a red, white and blue mask with stars and stripes, are glued to it knowing he must deflect it from the net at his back. Also on his mind is the opportunist opponent, also seen on the cachet, waiting to poke a rebounding puck into the goal for an easy score. Secondary saves are often necessary resulting in a wild scramble of skates and sticks.
As with the previously offered "Luge" cachet, please note how I use color coordination with the hand painting. The color of the stamp I pick up in the pads and pants, but my main thrust is to provide a realistic ice surface as a background which is perfect to highlight the red, white and blue color scheme of the U.S.A. uniform. I carry this color coordination to the hand-painted banner-like text box. This Olympic set will be a superb mini-collection and the dramatic "Luge" already offered (Item #L2202 still available at $10.75) and this exciting Ice Hockey FDC set the tone with the remaining three to be offered soon.
In my opinion, this individual cover and the five-cover set as a whole will be the "best" produced by any cachetmaker. I know that is "tooting my own horn" but I'd be pleased if you would compare them to any other cachets and judge for yourself. I want my COLLINS collectors to have the very best and that is what I always strive for.
