Dr. Allison Davis - Social Anthropologist, Educator

Collins Cover Announcement

DR. ALLISON DAVIS

Born in 1902 in Washington, D.C., Dr. Davis graduated from Williams College summa cum laude in 1924. He earned two master's degrees from Harvard and received his doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1942. He was a faculty member of that university from 1942 to 1976. He was a member of several important commissions during the Johnson and Nixon administrations. His published works include ten books. Allison Davis was one of the most influential social anthropologists and educators of his day.

My hand-painted cachet builds upon this theme. Two youths are

"hanging out" in an urban setting. With the massive governmental social effort over the last forty years leaving much to be desired in meaningful results, it was conditions such as these that Davis studied and wrote about. Also as part of the cachet, a large portrait is depicted in front of library shelves of multi-colored volumes. This is a dignified First Day Cover paying homage to this learned and respected figure in the Black Heritage series.

Dr. Allison Davis. Item #O2201. $10.75.
