Legends Of The West

Wyatt Earp

Collins Anecdotal Note

The most famous and notorious gun fight in the history

of the West took place in October of 1881. At the OK

Corral in Arizona Territory, Wyatt Earp was joined by his

brothers Morgan and Virgil plus a gambler friend, Doc

Holiday, as they confronted four outlaws. The bad buys

were two sets of brothers--the Clantons and the McLaurys

-- cattle rustlers and thugs. When the showdown took place, Billy Clanton drew on Wyatt and then the deadly melee began. When it was over Tom and Frank Mclaury plus

Billy Clanton were dead. Doc, Virgil, and Morgan were

wounded. Ike Clanton and Wyatt Earp escaped without a

scratch. This incident secured the reputation of the

benevolent Western gunfighters as heroic figures of violent enforcement bringing law and order to the turbulent frontier. The shootout at the OK Corral. A Legend of the West.
