Legends Of The West
Geronimo
Collins Anecdotal Note
In the mid 1800's when Americans began to settle the
Southwest, they found themselves confronted by thousands of fierce and hostile Apache Indians. Of the dozen or so distinct bands, most formidable were the Chiricahuas who were led by the wily Chief Geronimo. His birth name was Gokhlayeh and since childhood he had been taught to be cunning and tough. The name "Geronimo" was given him by the Mexican Army which suffered many casualties by his warriors. Against overwhelming odds, he continued to fight long after most tribes had been forced onto reservations. In his long war against the settlers and U.S. Cavalry, Geronimo earned for himself lasting fame and
infamy. A Legend of the West.
