PRONGHORN - "WINTER RANGE"

On many of my philatelic adventures to western states, I see a variety of wildlife. No matter how many times viewed, a herd of pronghorns always stirs my heart. It makes me feel good to see these wild and fleet animals on the open range.

Since 1988 I have been doing an annual series entitled "Christmas Wildlife". It makes a wonderful mini-collection and it has been very well received. This year I've used the new cardinal stamp as well as the new traditional stamp. Most of the past years are reaching near sold-out status, so I would suggest that if your collection is lacking them, now would be a good time. Wildlife is a popular subject and, when it is combined with holiday stamps, the result is a wonderful collectible. I will continue this series each year, and I'm already considering ideas for the 1995 edition.

Lot 19 R2301 — 1994 Christmas Wildlife — Pronghorn (10-20-94)

This hand painted wildlife cachet is a beauty. A light snow has dusted the landscape which serves as a backdrop. Featured are two pronghorn bucks in a detailed close-up pose. The heads and necks are accented in white, and the dramatic horns curve upward. A hand painted border surrounds the scene. The two Christmas stamps have a first day of issue postmark from Harmony, Minnesota. The pronghorn is the fastest land animal in the Western Hemisphere. Lewis and Clark made several pronghorn observations, and they wrote, "of all the animals we have seen, the antelope seem to possess the most wonderful fleetness."
