Collins Cover Announcement
STARS OF THE SILENT SCREEN
HAROLD LLOYD
As this series winds down toward its conclusion, I am very proud of the set that has emerged. It is my belief that the hand-painted cachets have provided body and substance to the caricature style of the stamps. Combined, they provide a nice presentation for the cover collector.
Harold Lloyd, although not a widely recognizable name today, actually was one of the biggest stars of the Silent Screen Era. He made more than 500 movies beginning in 1914 which is indeed a staggering number. His most popular films included "Safety Last", "The Freshman", and "The Kid Brother".
This hand-painted cachet is a busy one. Harold finds himself on a building ledge high above a city street. Far below, vintage cars are parked along an awning-lined boulevard and tiny pedestrians stroll along wide sidewalks. To steady himself on his lofty perch, Lloyd has grabbed the long minute hand of a large nearby clock. Unfortunately, the face of the clock has been pulled forward because of his weight (revealing some of the inner workings) and he now dangles forward away from the building and over the street while grasping the clock's hand for dear life. It was one of the typical, potentially dangerous predicaments that early film audiences found so hilarious.
The now-familiar custom border frames this unusual cachet. Only one more cover remains to complete this Silent Screen set, and it has been a project that I've enjoyed working with. Join Harold Lloyd as he makes time stand still as he clings to the narrow ledge several stories up. Item #U2207. $10.75.
