Auto Tail Fin
Collins Cover Announcement
1959 CADILLAC FLEETWOOD
Auto Tail Fin -- Strip of Three
This automobile stamp, along with the Juke Box stamp issued the same day, marked the beginning of a new postal series entitled "American Culture". It is hard to imagine what subjects lie ahead in this series, but it certainly does offer a promise of some great cachets because all will be connected with American heritage and life. I think it will be a very interesting group of COLLINS Covers that will eventually emerge as the series begins to take shape.
The hand-painted cachet on this one features that classic car -- the 1959 Fleetwood Convertible. It spans the entire envelope from the lower left to the upper right. I considered painting it bright yellow or powder blue, but in the end I just had to go with fire-engine red. It's from the era of high rocket-like fins and lots of chrome trim. In the background of this cover is a rendition of the social gathering place of the Fifties -- the diner.
America has a continuing 1^v- affair with the automobile and this COLLINS Cover will be a much sought after item once it is gone from my stock. Years from now it will be a classic FDC featuring a classic auto. Put one in your garage now. 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood. Item #A2401. $10.75.
