Golf - Bobby Jones/Shinnecock Country Club Cachet
Subscriber-Only Edition
Fred's Anecdotal Note
This hand-painted Collins Cover is very scarce and desirable collectable. It was only produced for subscribers with no extras available. My cachet shows the seaside Shinnecock Country Clubhouse, the first in the United States opened in 1892. Also depicted on this "enter" FDC is Bobby Jones - - considered by meny to be the greatest golfer of all time. He won more major championships than anyone else and his talent, modesty, self-confidence, and good looks made him an American idol. The Collins number for this Limited Edition is G2406 and it will prove to be "The Best of Issue" for this new golf stamp.
Collins Cover Announcement
BOBBY JONES/SHINNECOCK HILLS GOLF CLUB CACHET
"Subscriber Only Limited Edition
This 1995 "Golf" COLLINS First Day Cover is a very limited edition produced only for subscribers with no extras being available for Purchase. As such, it will be an instant "sell out" from me; it will rarely appear on the open market; and, it will at once be worth a nice premium over purchase price. Twice a year I exclusively create special "subscriber only" cachets as an added benefit for COLLINS subscription collectors.
You will really enjoy having this superb "Golf" FDC in your holdings. In March of 1891 a Scotch golf professional named Willie Dunn came to America to build this country's first course. With a crew of 150 Indians from the Shinnecock Reservation on Long Island he cleared 4,000 acres of thick brush and laid out a twelve hole seaside course. By June he was finished, and the new game became so popular among Southampton residents that they decided to build a clubhouse.
Stanford White, the foremost architect in the country at that time, designed it and in the summer of 1892 the club was formally opened. Shinnecock Hills became the first golf course in the United States to have a clubhouse and to be incorporated and today remains one of the most revered in America.
My hand-painted Cachet shows the handsome clubhouse next to the ocean. Women and men in period dress are on the new course discovering the pleasures of golf. In the foreground, a tee has a ball placed on it with the name of the course and its founding year -1892.
Wanting to make this an even finer collectible, I decided to add as part of my cachet a rendition of Bobby Jones -- considered by many as the greatest golfer of all time. Jones won 13 major championships -- more than any other golfer. In 1930 he won all four events in the "Grand Slam" which included the U.S. Open, the British Open, and the U.S. Amateur and British Amateur Championships. Amazingly, Bobby remained an amateur and retired at age 28 when many other players were just getting started. He didn't like the strain or tension of getting ready for championship tournaments, but if he kept playing, there is no telling how many titles he could have won in his career.
Bobby Jones became a national idol and he was the model athlete. He had the proper balance of self-confidence and modesty which blended with his good looks and tremendous talent. He was, indeed, the ideal All-American boy.
When the new golf stamp was included with the Recreational Sports Series, I was determined to make sure COLLINS would make it special. The first step was to create a really fine cover to be included with my five-cover set. I accomplished my goal, and I believe the resulting cover (G2404) will become a very sought after item. Beyond doing a high quality golf cachet for the set, I decided I would choose the stamp for one of this year's two "extra" covers marie just for subscribers. The fin...l out-onic,' of that ci cision is this gorgeous Golf First Day of Issue Cover.
It shows the one hundred-plus year Shinnecock clubhouse and seaside course -- the oldest in the United States. It shows national sports hero Bobby Jones in his prime -- perhaps the finest golfer to ever play the game. It celebrates in hand-painted, First Day Cover format the game that has become so popular worldwide. And, it has ONLY been made for COLLINS subscribers. The limited edition COLLINS Golf cachet. Item #G2406. $9.75.
