PALAU
Tropical Pacific Island Paradise Cachet
A lovely native girl adorned with colorful flowers greets you on this hand-painted COLLINS First Day Cover. In her long and flowing black hair she wears two hibiscus blooms--a deep red and a creamy gold. Around her neck is a magenta and pink lei made from beautiful Island flowers. A colorful scarlet and green fruit dove perches on a fern branch over one of her shoulders. Beyond the other shoulder is the South Sea lagoon vista we all dream about. The turquoise waters lap gently at the sandy beach and stretch beyond a palm crowned atoll to the horizon where a pink evening sky signals the day's end. Near the beach, an Islander casts his fishing net out into the lagoon's water. Completing my fantasy Island cachet are three distinct and different seashell varieties that complete the mood and, in fact, help frame the lovely features and flowers of the alluring maiden.
The blue stamp, featuring native fish, a conch shell, and Palau's flag has the First Day postmark from Agana, Guam. (I visited there on my way to DaNang and it is a beautiful Island in its own right.) Palau was the final remaining United Nations trusteeship and this stamp commemorates the first Anniversary of its becoming an independent country. A charming First Day Cover and a COLLINS cachet I recommend very highly. From the tropics of the Pacific Ocean an Island paradise for your collection. Palau. Item #G2501. $10.75.
