150th Anniversary

Collins Cover Announcement

UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY

150th Anniversary - 1845 to 1995

This cachet was a very time-consuming one to paint and it has a nice historical flavor to celebrate the one hundred and fiftieth Birthday of the Academy. The cachet scene takes place in 1845 at the site of the brand new institution in Annapolis, Maryland. War Secretary William L. Marcy is conferring with Commodore Lewis Warrington of the United States Navy. Secretary Marcy points out planned expansion projects and I'm sure both have a vision of a successful future for the school that will train and educate naval officers. A hundred and fifty years later their vision and anticipation have been fulfilled by Annapolis.

Also present on this COLLINS is a hand-painted version of the Naval Academy seal. It is clean and crisp and the small details were very slow-going with a very small paint brush. I must admit that this painted seal has grown on me and has become an element that really adds to the over-all visual appeal.

From a topical collecting point of view, military covers are always sought after items. This one combines both the military and U.S. history aspects as my cachet travels back in time to year one - 1845. The new, well executed stamp is postmarked on Day of Issue at Annapolis. A tribute to the men and women who have passed through the Academy and to those midshipmen who are enrolled there now. A solid collectible -- the United States Naval Academy's 150th Anniversary. Item #J2501. $11.75.
