ANTIQUE AUTOMOBILES
1893 DURYEA AND 1898 COLUMBIA
Charles Duryea is considered the man responsible for America's first working internal combustion engine road vehicle. Along with his brother Frank, Charles manufactured their first car which was literally a carriage without a horse. This was in 1893.
A company called "Pope" was known for making bicycles. Their cycle trade name was "Columbia" and in 1898 they manufactured and sold a model using their familiar Columbia name. It was designed by their employee Hiram Maxim.
No other invention in recent memory has had so profound an impact on our lives as the automobile. My hand-painted cachet is done in classic line drawing style and with hand painting captures the turn-of-the-century feeling as a horseless carriage slowly meanders down a country lane. This is a five stamp issue and I will be featuring all five stamps on a three cover set. The final two will be offered soon and will include the 1894 Haynes, the 1899 Winton, and the 1901 White. As for now, this COLLINS will let you park Charlie's "Duryea" and Hiram's "Columbia" in your hobby garage. Item #P2503. $12.00.
