WINTER GARDEN FLOWERS
PANSY
This is the first of three COLLINS hand-painted cachets that will be a most interesting mini-set to own. The setting is early spring with the final clutches of "Old Man Winter" fading away. Grass has begun to sprout and the first flowers of the year start to appear. Crocus and winter aconite. Snowdrops and anemone. The familiar pansy. All of these lovely flowers that provide us with a colorful transition to spring are shown in vivid close-ups, and you will enjoy the detail.
Rather than just show the various flowers, I opted to do something a little different. Each of the three covers (this one and the two ' still forthcoming) will be a "chapter" in a First Day Cover story. A little saga, set with a plot that also provides a transition from winter to spring, will be played out in the three delightful cachets. In this first COLLINS of the set, two young girls share a few moments of peaceful friendship while enjoying a bed of beautiful pansies. This cover by itself is a fine collectible, but my next cachet in this set will continue the story. Curious? Pansy. Item #R2501.
Spring 2024 Mail Sale Commentary
Lot 21 R2501 to R2503 — Winter Garden Flowers — Set of 3 covers — 1-19-96
This very cute 3-cover set offers a small drama that I entwined amid the Winter Garden flowers issue. In R2501, two young girls share a carefree moment enjoying beautiful pansies with their many varied and colorful design patterns. In R2502, two boys of similar age have lost their baseball (remember looking for those elusive balls?) and as they search, it hides in a vivid clump of anemones with snowdrops nearby. Finally, in R2503, it all comes to a happy conclusion as one of the girls has found the baseball and is returning it to the sheepish young owner. I think the expression on his face says it all. He is bashful and just a little embarrassed that he could not find the ball himself but that the girl did. Yet, he is delighted that he and his buddy will be able to continue their game. In the foreground of each cachet are colorful and lovely flowers that are the subjects of the three stamps. This is the first time these covers have appeared in one of my mail sales.
